Vietnam’s organic rice are commanding exuberant prices between USD 2000-3000 per tonne in several foreign markets including USA although supply is still to meet market demand. The Ecotiger Company of Vietnam has recently begun exporting its Ecorice-branded products to Canada, the US and the EU at a high premium, much higher than the price of normal rice at 400 USD per tonne. They have entered the new markets following the shipment of Hoa Sua-branded rice to the UK by Ca Mau-based Vien Phu JSC.
To cater to premium export market, Ecotiger Company has been working with farmers in Co Chien Island in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh to ensure that their rice is grown in accordance with organic standards required by the export markets. The farmers use rice-shrimp production models, with waste from shrimp farming fertilizing rice fields. Water from shrimp ponds also helps protect rice from diseases. In May 2016, Ecorice products were certified by the US, the EU and Japan.
