Data from the United state have made the statements false by the Federal government about the self sufficiency of Nigeria in Rice by 2015.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina had announced last year that due to increase in the rice production in the country because of implementing Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA) and the Growth Enhancement Scheme (GES) of the federal government which make the rice producers to produce all varieties of rice consumed in the country and hence make the country self sufficient and ban on the importation of commodities by 2015.

But a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) report yesterday showed that rice farmers and millers in Nigeria think that complete ban on importation of commodities to the country will affect the local farmers of the Nigeria

According to the USDA, Nigeria’s rice import in FY 2013-14 has increased 3.4% from 2.9 million tons of rice to 3 million tons of rice. This is mainly due to increase in rice production in 2013-14 falls short of consumption requirement.
