The national Agriculture and Food Agency (AFA) on Wednesday reported that Taiwan will donate 16,670 MT of white rice to 17 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Pacific continent this year.
The rice will be shipped by the end of June 2015 and the entire donation task to the recipient countries would be done under supervision of the World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce, the World League for Freedom and Democracy ROC Chapter, Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation, Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), according to the AFA.
The donated 16,670 MT of rice would be meant to feed refugees and poor people. Beneficiary Asian countries would be Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan and the Philippines, African countries would be Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador in Latin America; and Tuvalu in the South Pacific, the agency said.
The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO) estimates say that one in evry nine people suffer from chronic hunger.
The AFA said that Taiwan would continue its rice donation and working with the MOFA and non-governmental organizations until it has rice supply sufficient to meets its local needs.
Under the aid program, which started in 2002, Taiwan has donated more than 270,000 metric tons of white rice to people in 33 countries, the AFA said.
