Sukup Manufacturing Co. is working with North Iowa Area Community College to host an event for local students showcasing advanced manufacturing and the many career opportunities it supports. The event will be held October 1 at the new Sukup Manufacturing Co. headquarters in Sheffield, Iowa. Students can sign up for the Elevate Advanced Manufacturing event through NIACC. This event is presented in celebration of National Manufacturing Day October 3.

The purpose of the Elevate Advanced Manufacturing event is to highlight the progress that’s been made in the manufacturing arena in recent years. Manufacturing supports an estimated 17.4 million jobs in the United States. From January 2010 to April 2012 manufacturing added 489,000 jobs and workers in these manufacturing jobs on average earn 7% more per hour than workers in other private industries. Additionally, manufacturing workers are more likely to have the options of medical care and retirement benefits.

In the last two decades, the manufacturing sector has been steadily “up-skilling” – more manufacturing employees are higher educated and higher skilled than the past. Manufacturing encompasses many different fields: welding, tool and die, research and development, engineering, accounting, supply chain management, quality control and many more. Many of the machines on the shop floor at Sukup Manufacturing Co. are computer-controlled and require knowledge of modern technology and computer programming in order to operate. In the manufacturing sector, workers with these skills are in high demand. The majority of skills needed for these manufacturing jobs can be gained at a community college such as NIACC.

Sukup Manufacturing Co. and NIACC are teaming up to give high school students a first-hand look at jobs in today’s advanced manufacturing environment. The students will tour the new Sukup offices, as well as the manufacturing floor. They will get a feel for the opportunities that are available in the office setting, as well as in manufacturing. While on the shop floor, they will see advanced manufacturing at work, as Sukup Manufacturing Co. invests in state-of-the-art equipment to fabricate their products.
