Indian Government is estimating India’s rice export including basmati and non-basmati rice at around 10.1 million tons in the year 2014-15 (April 2014-March 2015) down by 7% from around 10.9 million tons exported by India in 2013-14.

The decline in the India’s rice export is mainly due to less basmati rice exported by India and also due to the ban by Iran on Rice Import.

This year India’s basmati rice export is expected at around 3.3 million tons down by 10% from around 3.7 million tons exported in 2013-14.The decline is mainly affected after Iran has banned rice import due to its sufficient domestic rice production. Iran is major foreign rice market for India.

In 2013-14, India exported around 1.4 million tons of basmati rice to Iran and this year India could export rice in between 800,000 tons to 1 million tons as Iran have glut in their domestic market said AIREA’s Executive Director.

APEDA’s statistic shows that India exported 1.62 million tons of Basmati Rice and 4.5 million tons of non basmati rice during April –October of 2014-15 as compared to 1.8 million tons of Basmati Rice and 4.5 million tons of non basmati rice exported during April –October of 2013-14.

USDA estimates India’s basmati rice export to be declined by 14% from around 10.15 million tons to 8.7 million tons this year.

Mean while this year Thailand aims at exporting 11 million tons of rice to rice importing nation and this is almost 64% above than the rice exported by Thailand in 2013 which was  6.6 million tones and 22% above in terms of value which was invested in 2014 of $4.42 billion and is likely to retain the world’s top rice exporter for the second consecutive year.
