After the South Korea announced to remove the rice caps from the next year, the government has announced a tariff of 513% on the rice imported to protect the domestic market fro its impact.
For the last 200 years ,S.Korea has put on some quota for the rice import from foreign with a deal signed with the World Trade Organisation (WTO).But this deal is going to expire this year and
the government has announced to open a market where the farmers will get the highest permissible tariffs.
Agriculture Minister Lee Dong-phil told a parliamentary agriculture committee meeting on Thursday that they had proposed WTO a tariff of 513% to protect its local market.WTO will take a time of months to think over this.
Rice imports are an extremely sensitive political issue among rural voters who fear they would eventually be pushed out of the market by cheap foreign imports.
