As per local sources, it has been indicated that the government of Indonesia planning to import rice from Pakistan. The minister said that the MoU will be made by both ministers to be followed up later by companies from both countries. Thomas said, “This is needed so that Bulog can send an inspection team to Pakistan to see the needed quality and volume.”
Further, though the government of Indonesia has stated that Indonesia is importing rice from Pakistan because imports from Vietnam and Thailand are not optimal. He also said we are late in importing rice and El Nino threat has caused many countries to fight over rice. In addition, a huge volume of rice imports, by the Philippines from Vietnam has been ordered by China, Taiwan and the Philippines. Thus, the government is concerned if two exporting nations would be able to supply rice in the stipulated time and therefore, it is to secure that rice is to be procured from Pakistan.
Further, in this context, the Vice-President told the President Director of the National Logistis Agency (Bulog) Djarot Kusumayakti, said that since the import tap was opened last November, Bulog had only imported 227,000 tons of rice out of the total one million tons import quota from Vietnam and 500,000 tons from Thailand. Djarot said that we’re waiting for the green light and they plan to import rice from Pakistan. Bulog will only have to wait for the agreement between both countries.
