As per USDA, during Q1 (January-March 2013), India’s rice exports have slowed down to around 2.62 million tons, which is 14% lower from about 3.04 million tons of rice exported same period last year.

 The exports of non-basmati has declined due to increased prices this year , with exported tonnage reaching to around 1.43 million tons in the first quarter of 2013, down by 30% from 2.06 million tons exported last year.

But, basmati rice exports in the first quarter of 2013 have increased to about 1.19 million tons that is up by about 21% from 980,000 tons exported during same period last year due to high demand in Iran. It has been indicated that Iran has emerged as the largest rice importer of Indian rice, importing an estimated 405,500 tons in the first quarter.

In total, India has exported 10.4 million tons of rice in 2012, including 6.9 million tons of non-basmati rice and 3.5 million tons of basmati rice. In 2013 exports are forecasted to reach around 8.1 million tons, which is 20% lesser from the previous year.
