According to the reports, the government of Bangladesh may likely to reduce the prices of rice and atta (flour) under open market sale (OMS) programme from next month aiming to bring more people under the ongoing safety net scheme. In addition, it may also fix the procurement prices of upcoming Aman rice on November 12, 2015. Further, the Food Planning and Monitoring Unit (FPMU) in its meeting held at the conference room of the Ministry of Food (MoF) on Thursday discussed the upcoming Aman rice procurement and re-fixation of OMS prices accordingly.
After the meeting, it has been narrated by the Food Minister Advocate that in the meeting the matter was discussed on the stock of food grains in the country. It was also told that now there is a stock of 1.6 million tonnes of food grains which is 0.3 million tonnes higher than that of the previous year. Further, it was informed that the FPMU will sit again on November 12 and fix the procurement prices of Aman rice and paddy and re-fix the prices of rice and atta under OMS programme accordingly, so that we could bring more people under the ongoing OMS programme.
In this context, it was indicated that at present the rice under OMS is being sold at Tk 24 per kg while atta at Tk 22. The OMS is going on in all the districts and the country’s public warehouses have the capacity to store 2 million (20 lakh) tonnes of food grains. In addition, there will be a provision to make space of the warehouses from December so that we could store Aman rice and paddy. Furthermore, the FPMU under the Ministry of Food is responsible for monitoring the food security situation in the country and implementing the policies relating to food security. In the meeting the Finance Minister, Agriculture Minister, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister and high officials of different ministries were present.
