The Philippine department of Agriculture (DA) promotes the use of brown rice over polished white rice as it has higher nutritional value and also it would act as an alternative for rice and hence will complement with government’s rice sufficiency program.
Senior Scientist, DA told the sources that they will sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with National Food Authority (NFA) to start distributing brown rice to the retailers. Once the agreement would sign they will distribute the brown rice to Metro Manila and then would extend to other states gradually.
NFA will purchase the brown rice from local producers and will sell to local retailers at low prices and would hence cut down the rice prices and import of rice. DA encouraged farmers to sell their rice directly to hotels, restaurants and other food establishment apart from selling it to NFA. The DA official encouraged farmers to plant more varieties of brown rice which are rich in vitamins B1, B3, B6, B9, dietary fiber, antioxidants, protein, manganese, phosphorous and iron.
