I am often tasked with financing sales to some of the more challenging markets and, whilst I cannot do the impossible, there are often ways of getting things done in difficult territories. It is usually a case of finding the right route in and working with the appropriate financial parties for each specific country.
This work can include countries involving sanctions, late payment and soft extended credit terms, but suffice it to say it is possible to trade safely and, of course, always in a fully sanctions compliant manner.
Iran is a good example, but so are Russia, Cuba, Nigeria and even Greece currently.
The message here is do not be afraid to ask about financing a sale to a country or a buyer, even if the general view is that it will be difficult or even impossible.
Regarding Iran, there are ways of trading securely, compliant with sanctions, and (not least) of getting paid. It is possible to collect payment from Iran, confirm sight L/C’s, discount deferred payment L/C’s and issue performance bonds and APG’s if required.
So, like I say, do not be afraid to ask.
