Pakistan Rice Miller Association (PRMA) Along with the Collaboration with United Nation Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has decided to develop a power generation plant in rice producing areas of country.

PRMA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UNIDO, under which the UNIDO will support PRMA to develop a rice husk based gasification plant of capacity 1 Mega Watt at Bawalnagar, Pakistan, according to local sources.

The project is funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) which aims at generation of cheap and uninterrupted power supply.

Currently Pakistan is suffering with frequent power cuts and break downs which has affected several small scale and medium scale industries in terms of productivity and incomes.

This project could bring Biomass gasification technologies in Pakistan in future, said a Industrial Development Officer at UN.

UNDIO’s country representative for Pakistan was quoted as saying that “Pakistan is an agricultural country with abundant, clean and cheap fuel. Such projects will help Pakistan’s Small and Medium Scale Industry to have an uninterrupted power supply and hence will make them grow in terms of productivity and incomes.
