About 70,000 hectares of field having paddy or cotton crops on it has been destroyed due to continuous heavy rains in four districts of Malwa. The cotton was grown on 45,000 hectares while paddy on 25,000 hectares in Muktsar, Fazilka, Mansa and Bathinda districts has destroyed.
As per agriculture department officials, crop damage up to 75% has been reported in 20,000 hectares while 50-60% loss of crops has been estimated in another 20,000 hectares and there has been 25-40% loss to crops in 5,000 hectare.
The cotton crops has severely destroyed in the Muktsar, home district of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal whereas in Fazilka, the fibre crop has been hurt in about 15,000 hectares. In Mansa and Bathinda districts, cotton has been damaged in about 10,000 hectares
A survey by the revenue department was performed to know the actual damaged area.The field area has been damaged by the over flowing of the canals and water logging of the field.The agricultural department speed up the process so that the affected farmers can be compensated.
