Agriculture Minister Hari Prasad Parajuli of Nepal has announced the launch of ” Paddy Mission Program” at a function organised to marked “National Paddy Day”.
The investment for this program will come from the upcoming budget in a bid to increase paddy production.
Hari Prasad Parajuli said that they are working to launch paddy pocket areas from Jhapa to Kailali to increase paddy production and minimize imports.
The Slogan for this year’s National Paddy day is “Modernization of paddy farming and minimizing the import of food grains “
The Agriculture minister said that they will distribute about 450,000 tons of paddy seeds in pocket areas from Jhapa to Kailali
These paddy seeds would increase production to 60 quintals per hectares from the current production of 35 quintals per hectares.
Paddy production determines the Gross Domestic Product and national economic growth. The year 2010/11 had a record paddy production of 50.72 million tons and economic growth stood at 4.6 percent but the growth rate declined to 3.6 percent with the 11 percent decline in paddy production in 2011/12. Likewise, growth rate for this year has been projected at 4.5 percent after paddy plantation increased by 12 percent to 50.47 million tons due to favorable monsoon.
