Recent Cyclone Hudhud has destroyed paddy fields in the far-western region of Nepal. The fields were harvested by the farmers but rice was still to be collected from the fields by the farmers. Before farmers could collect the rice, sudden rainfall destroyed the fields.
Ram Sworup Chaudhary of Gadariya, Kailali has said that earlier the rice was destroyed by the flood and now the rain has destroyed the fields. About 10 bigha land were swept away by the flood in mid-August in Kailali district.
Rewati Joshi, an officer at the District Agriculture Development Office, Kailali, said that paddy is planted on 71,000 hectares of the land of which only 7% has harvested. Per year about 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of paddy is produced in Kailali district.
Rajesh KC, crop specialist of Far-western Regional Agriculture Directorate, Dipayal has said that all the nine district of the region including Kailali and Kanchanpur has been destroyed by the flood and sudden change in temperature has made the region’s folk ill.
Village development committees of Saptari has huge quantity of paddy destroyed ,Crops in district like Bhutahi, Tarahi, Pato, Mallekpur, Aurahi, Khadgapur, Narghau among other VDCs was also destroyed.
Paddy in 25 bigha land in Bhutahi ward No 5, 6 and 7, Mallekpur-5, Khurhuriya area has submerged.
