New South Wales Department of Environment and Primary Industrieshave developed new fragnant rice variety named Topaz. A plant breeder Peter Snell helped develop Topaz . The purpose to develop this is for its sustenance in the New South Wales Riverina and it was tested in northern Victoria.
Features of Topaz:
- Semi-dwarf variety
- Yield increase of about 15 per cent for growers.
- Yields up to 11 tonnes per hectare
- Superior taste
Dr Snell said that the fragnance in the rice was lost for a long time due to the drought condition in the area which enable the perfect farming and hence came as a revenge for both domestic and also international market.
“A big growth in food services, particularly for Jasmine, in prevalent in Australia at the moment.”
Also he said that the new rice variety will be fruitful for the rice miller,growers in the coming years.
