The Finance Ministry of Indonesia government has fixed a target of Paddy rice at around 76.23 million tons (around 48 million tons, basis milled) as quoted to Bloomberg. Further, it was stated that government is also planning to expand rice fields to about 60,000 hectares and to improve irrigation facilities at farm lands in 2016. However, the government is very keen on achieving self-sufficiency in rice production and to have a break in imports for few years.
As per USDA estimates, Indonesia should produce 36.3 million tons of rice, basis milled (around 57.17 million tons, basis paddy) and may import around 1.25 million tons of rice in MY 2014-15 (October – September). While, some observers are forecasting that imports may reach to about 1.6 million tons of rice.
