According to one of the reports as stated by the Minister of State for Agriculture, in the Parliament that the Indian researchers in the Indian Institute of Rice Research (IIRR) of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) have identified three varieties of rice that are suitable for diabetic patients. These three varieties named as Lalat (GIS.17), BPT 5204 (GIQ.42) and Sampada (GIQ) are having low glycemic values.

Further, it was also informed that rice varieties with glycemic index value equal to or lower than 55 are considered to be suitable for diabetic patients. The Minister informed in the Upper House of the Parliament that the ICAR – IIRR, Hyderabad has identified these three varieties and are now being cultivated in different states in India.
