Custom Official said that Nepal has imported about 97098 tons of Rice from India through Belhiya Transit Point in the first six months of FY 2014-15( August 2014-July 2015) above by 42% for the same period of FY 2013-14.

Ministry of Agriculture Development said that the demand for fine aromatic Indian rice has been increased in Nepal for the past few years. Nepalese prefer Indian rice against their local coarse and medium rice.

Nepal Rastra Bank statistics show that Nepal has imported rice worth 12.37 billion in FY 2013-14 up about 46% from around 8.47 billion despite of the surplus stock of around 800,000 tons from previous year due to increased foreign rice demand.

MoAD shows that the import of rice is expected to increase this year as the monsoon has arrived late in Nepal and has received below average rainfall. Nepal paddy production in 2014 declined by 5.1% to around 4.78 million tons from around 5 million tons from last year.

USDA estimated Nepal to import around 350,000 tons of rice in 2015.It estimates Nepal’s MY 2014-15(October 2014-September 2015) paddy rice production to decline to about 4.655 million tons from estimated 5 million tons in MY 2013-14.
