Iran Import of rice down by 39.34% in first two months of CY 2014-15- In CY 2013-14,Iran imported rice around 323,888 tons which becomes 196,600 tons of rice in the same period in current Iranian calendar year (March 21-May 21).This corresponds to about 39.34% decrease in rice import.
In terms of value, imports of rice amounted to $235.1 million in the mentioned period of time, indicating 36.23 percent drop compared to the same time last year, the ISNA news agency reported on Monday, citing a report released by the Iranian Customs Administration. Decline in basmati rice imports from India since February 2014, after Iran had revised the accepted level of arsenic content in basmati rice from 150 parts per million (ppm) to 120 ppm, seems to be the main reason for a plunge in Iran’s total rice imports. According to data from India’s Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), India exported about 130,000 tons a month of basmati until February 2014, but sales have since plunged to 50,000-60,000 tons a month since then. India exported around 1.44 million tons of basmati rice to Iran in FY 2013-14 (April – March), up about 33% from around 1.08 million tons of basmati exported in FY 2012-13.
The main reason for this decline may be the revised Arsenic content level basmati rice from 150 parts per million (ppm) to 120 ppm,
