India supporting Philippines for continuing their domestic import restrictions. Philippines intends to have this import restriction till the year 2017 and some countries like US, Canada, Australia and Thailand are not approving it yet and are playing hard ball. A special treatment permission given to Philippines by WTO has expired in the year 2012 India supporting Philippines for continuing their domestic import restrictions. A govt. official of India told to Business line that to be concerned about food security is right and Philippines must be supported in this. India itself has fought a tough battle with WTO for legitimating farm subsidies for own food procurement program.

Indonesia and Vietnam are also supporting Philippines in this context. It seems that any other WTO member can have a dispute in this matter with Philippines for breaking the rules by continuing the restriction. According to quantitative restriction system, the Philippines is allowed to import 350,000 tonne of rice grain per year under annually under MAV.  A special treatment permission given to Philippines by WTO has expired in the year 2012 India supporting Philippines for continuing their domestic import restrictions.

Imports under Minimum access volume 40 per cent, while imports above the quotas are levied a higher import duty of 50 per cent.
