FAO  of the United Nations (UN) new norms for export may help India’s Rice Export has it has defined some new acceptable levels of lead in Rice.

The UN food standards body the Codex Alimentarius Commission earlier has put forward maximum acceptable levels of lead in infant formula which should be less than 0.01 mg/kg  and of arsenic is less than 0.2 mg/kg in rice.

But as per the Commission’s standard, the United States is having more than the permissible level of arsenic in their rice.

Indian trade sources say rice produced in the United States contains more than 0.3 mg/kg of arsenic as against less than 0.2 mg/kg in India.

The United States contribute 2.7 million tonnes of the 40.7 million tonnes of rice trade estimated globally in 2014,  the country’s total surplus out of over 7.5 million tonnes of annual output.
