Saudi Arabia is one of the largest country on Earth without rivers, due to which there has been a food undersupply and may increase in coming years  due to rise of immigrant personnel from other Asian rice-eating countries and coming for Haj and Umrah. Hence the fast growing demand of rice is one of the major challenges for the policy makers and the main agenda is to provide bulk without any further raise in the rice prices, which is about 20% per month, the effect on rice in saudi arabia is seen.

The government is exploring ways to reduce rice imports by developing natural agricultural production and by encouraging agricultural investments on foreign farm lands and re-exporting to the country. Currently about 70-80 percent of rice imports comprise of basmati rice from Thailand, India, Pakistan and United states.
