Speaking to Media in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on 6th Feb, Cambodian Commerce Minister Sun Chanthol said that it is unlikely for Cambodia to achieve its self assigned 1 million tons rice export target by 2015 due to insufficient fund and unavailability of sufficient warehouses for storage.
The country has set goal of achieving export volume of 1 million tons in 2010 but last year has exported only 387,000 tons told Mr Chanthol to the reporter at annual conference of Cambodia Rice Federation.
Mr Chanthol said that they are trying to make new foreign market to achieve their target. He said that he will visit Russia next month and during the visit he will try to make new Russian market for Cambodian milled rice.
He also said The Chinese government-run China National Cereals, Oils and Food stuffs Corporation (COFCO) formally agree for 100,000 tonnes of rice import from Cambodia on 12th August in Beijing. So far, Cambodia has exported nearly 70,000 tons to China.
Cambodia’s Annual paddy production is around 9 million tons with over 3 million tons left over for export per year. Five main buyers of Cambodian rice are France, Poland, Malaysia, China, and the Netherlands.
