As per the sources, it has been reported that Nakuru County has signed an agricultural development agreement with China that will foster knowledge on rice farming on arid areas. It has been revealed that the Sister-City agreement with Ningxia Hui County will provide Nakuru County with the expertise on how to increase rice yields by farming on both dry land and wetlands. Unlike Kenya, where rice is only grown in wetlands, China produces the crop on dry land.
Further, the agreement was signed by Governor’s Kinuthia Mbugua and his Chinese counterpart Wang Heshan in Ningxia Hui County during the 2nd Forum on Chinese-African Local Government Cooperation in Beijing. The two counties would benefit from exchange programmes with mutual benefits in trade, education, culture and personnel among others in order to promote prosperity and development. In addition, the agreement included promotion of research and development and improvement of maize farming, which is vital to the two nations.
It was emphasized that working together on agriculture where it will be shared common interest particularly in Corn improvement in both regions and also improvement of sheep breeds by interbreeding sheep from the two counties for better outcome as a part of the agreement. In addition, there would also be a value addition for potatoes through adapting technology of Ningxia Hui on processing noodles and thereafter a noodle processing factory would also be established through the initiative.
