Telangana government has requested to the centre government not to decrease the rice levy from current 75% to 25%.CM K Chandrasekhara Rao has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take their issue before the  Department of Food and Public Distribution.

Rice Levy plays an important role as they provide a charter to sell fixed quantity of rice to the FCI or state agencies at minimum support price and remaining quantity they can sell at to the open market. The idea behind this is to save the locale farmers from the market vagaries.

In his letter,CM highlights that the department has decided to reduce the levy from the 2014-15 kharif marketing season itself.  If it is not to retain the earlier levels, please ensure that the levy is put at 50 per cent.
